This pair of paintings is attributed on stylistic grounds to Francesco Monti, one of a group of Venetian and Bolognese painters including Canaletto and Piazzetta, who were commissioned by the Duke of Richmond circa 1725 to paint a series of allegorical pictures of tombs intended to commemorate the leading figures of the Protestant Cause in England and the Whig settlement. Two by Monti are in the Galleria Nazionale, Bologna.

Much of Monti's other work is preserved in churches in Bologna, including S. Maria della Piet, S. Maria della Pioggia and S. Petronio, as well as in Bergamo and in Brescia, where he died.
