Contemporary green crushed levant morocco, by the CLUB BINDERY, 1906 and finished by LEON MAILLARD, covers richly tooled in gilt to a panelled design of interlaced lines, the spaces filled with pointillé, floral and leafy design, spine with a matching design in six compartments, gilt lettered in one, gilt edges, green morocco doublures and slik linings; quarter morocco chemise and slipcase. Provenance: bound for Robert Hoe, printer, with Pierpont Morgan the most important New York book collector of the turn of the century, first president of the Grolier Club, founder and patron of the Club Bindery (bookplate, his sale Anderson Galleries 1911-13); Thomas B. Lockwood (bookplate).

LIMITED EDITION, number 58 of 100 copies, of a total edition of 300. ROBERT HOE'S OWN COPY. The Club Bindery was run by several European craftsmen - Léon Maillard being the most talented finisher -- imported by members of the Grolier Club. In the 15 years of its existence the Bindery produced the best work in America.
