2o (380 x 242 mm). Woodcut on title and 217 woodcuts in the text. (Some minor marginal worming to last few leaves, some occasional pale browning.) Contemporary brown blind-tooled morocco, green silk ties (lacks front free endpaper, repairs to inner hinges, ends of spine and extemities); modern board slipcase. Provenance: Marcel Jeanson (his sale, Sotheby's Monaco, 16 June 1988, lot 34).

THE JEANSON COPY, in a contemporary binding, of this edition of Gesner's important ornithological work; this edition not listed in the Wellisch bibliography and mis-collated by Nissen, who apparently was not able to examine a copy himself.

"Considered the basis of modern zoology" (Horblit, One Hundred Books Famous in Science 39, first edition). Gesner was the first to describe birds based on his and his contemporaries's scientific research. The 217 woodcuts by Lukas Schan are the best and closest to nature in any book published to that time. Nissen IVB 350; Staedtke Gessner 1516-1565, pp. 154ff.
