4o (264 x 210 mm). 18 engraved plates after drawings by Jan van Rymsdyk (fl.1760-1770) and William Bell, engraved by W. Sharp, P.C. Canot and William Skelton (minor faint foxing to a few plates). Later half morocco, marbled boards; cloth folding case.
FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Most of the works had appeared previously in Philosophical Transactions. The most notable papers include his "Proposals for the recovery of persons apparently drowned," two studies on hermaphrodism, "An Account of the free-martin" and "An account of an extraordinary pheasant," a study on the air-cells of birds, and a study on the circulatory relationship between the placenta and the uterus.
