FIRST EDITION of Leeser's Hebrew-English Sephardic prayerbook, "THE FIRST COMPREHENSIVE PRAYERBOOK PUBLISHED IN AMERICA" (Goldman). The work was printed from imported Hebrew types by typesetters who were taught to read Hebrew specifically for this edition, which consisted of only 500 copies. Rabbi Leeser (1806-1868), born in Prussia, emigrated to America at the age of 17, first settling in Richmond with relatives, then became hazzan of the Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia. He enjoyed a long and remarkably accomplished career as author, editor, and translator, and was active in the founding of many well-known Jewish organizations. Goldman 36; Rosenbach 411; Singerman 630; Wachs 17. COMPLETE SETS ARE EXTREMELY RARE. (6)
