LIEBREICH, Richard (1830-1917). Atlas der Ophthalmoscopie. Berlin: August Hirschwald, 1863.
2o (396 x 288 mm). Parallel text in French and German. 12 chromolithgraphed plates [one folding]. (Some pale spotting.) Contemporary black half morocco, mottled paper boards, gilt-titled on front cover (repairs to morocco, endpapers renewed); half morocco folding case.
FIRST EDITION of first atlas of the ophthalmoscopy and the model for all later atlases. "The author was an assistant to Helmholtz at the time of the invention of the ophthalmoscope" (Garrison-Morton). The work is illustrated with brilliantly colored chromolithographs which were made from Liebreich's drawings. An exceptional artist, Liebreich made his own paintings from which the chromolithographs for his atlas were made. His unusually detailed presentation was met with great enthusiasm. He did the first work in genetics in ophthalmology, studying pigmentary retinitis in a single extended family. Garrison-Morton 5892; Heirs of Hippocrates 1967; Waller 5802.
