8o (184 x 135 mm). Woodcut printer's device on title, numerous woodcut diagrams in text. (Some pale dampstaining, a few intermittent ink stains.) Modern crimson morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Brugalla, 1941. Provenance: early signature on title; Francisco Condeminas (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE WORK ON NAVIGATION. Antonio de Najera was a Portuguese mathemetician and astronemer, born in Lisbon, although some authorities regarded him as a Spaniard since his principal works were written in Spanish. All his works are rare and deal with astronomy, speculative and paractical navigation.
The last copy to appear at auction, according to American Book Prices Current, was sold at Sotheby's London, 23 April 1987; other than that copy, the only copy we have been able to trace on the market was that offered by Maggs, Books Printed in Spain (1927), item 651. Not in Adams. Alden & Landis 628/85; Heredia cat. 4533; Medina (BHA) 843; Palau 187291; Salva 3792.
