NAPOLEON BONAPARTE. Letter signed ("Napoleon" with flourish), to Ferdinand III, Grand Duke of Tuscany, [Elba], 10 October 1814. 1 page, 4to, integral blank. In French.
THE EMPEROR ALONE. From his exile in Elba, Napoleon sends a poignant plea for news about his wife and child--both of whom he will never see again. Here he tells Ferdinand that he has not heard from his wife since August and from his son in six months, and he pleads for Ferdinand's intervention: "I beg your Royal Highness to let me know if you will permit me to send weekly letters to the Empress in your care and send me in return news of her and the letters of my son's governess Madame la Comtesse de Montesquiou. I flatter myself that, despite the events that have so changed [the fortunes] of individuals, Your Royal Highness, retain some friendship for me. If you would give me these assurances it would afford me great consolation..."
