4o (284 x 223 mm). 12 engraved folding plates, 3 engraved folding maps and 11 letterpress folding tables. (First map loose, some very pale occasional spotting, a few short tears.) Contemporary speckled calf, spine gilt (some minor rubbing). Provenance: Mrs. Howe (presentation inscription); Westport House (bookplate).
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY of the future Lord Mulgrave's "important addition to early nautical science in the polar regions..." INSCRIBED BY PHIPPS on the half-title: "To the Honble Mrs. Howe from Her most obedient Servant The Author." The Phipps-Lutwidge voyage aboard Racehorse and Carcass is perhaps better remembered for the presence of young Horatio Nelson, as midshipman aboard the Carcass, and his encounter with a polar bear" (Hill). This is the official account of the voyage, as against that published in the same year by F. Newbery by a member of the expedition. They reached 80o 48'N but were then blocked by ice.
