FIRST EDITION, second issue, with page 79 correctly numbered. The Rivals is Sheridan's first published play. Ashley V, p.152.

[With:] MASSINGER, Philip (1583-1640). A New Way to pay Old Debts. London: E[lizabeth] P[urslowe] for Henry Seyle, 1633. 4o (181 x 125 mm). Title with woodcut device, woodcut initials and type ornaments throughout. (Browned, margins cropped with occasional loss of letters, some repairs, F3v and F4 with repairs affecting text.) 19th-century speckled calf, spine gilt, edges gilt, by Worsfold (rebacked preserving original spine, a bit dry). FIRST EDITION of Massinger's best known comedy. Based on Middleton's A Trick to catch the Old One (1608), it far surpassed its model, especially in the character of the villainous Sir Giles Overreach.
