[AMERICAN IMPRINT]. WESTMINSTER ASSEMBLY OF DIVINES (1643-1620). The Shorter Catechism of the Reverend Assembly of Divines, With the Proofs Thereof out of the Scriptures...For the Benefit of Christians in General... Boston: William M'Alpine, 1768.
12o. 33, [1], p. Title with border of small printer's flowers. (Title and A2 frayed with tiny marginal losses affecting a few letters, scattered tears and soiling). Sewn into contemporary coarse paper wrapper (worn, spine chipped). Provenance: Eunice Barnard, ink signature on last page; Hepzibah Flagg of Framingham, "given to her in the year 1789. Eunice Barnard dyed the year 1791...aged 84," ink inscription on last page.
AN VERY RARE BOSTON CATECHISM. This issue not in Evans, Bristol or Shipton & Mooney; see Evans 11115 for issue "Printed [by William M'Alpine] for John Perkins, in Union-Street near the market." The AAS copy of Evans 11115 lacks pp.29-[34]; AAS copy of this issue has damaged titlepage. The so-called shorter catechism was codified in 1647 by the Westminster Assembly and remains to this day part of the doctrinal standards of many Presbyterian churches. It was first printed in America at Cambridge in 1665 and frequently reprinted, though many of these are represented by a single surviving copy.
