Lot Essay

The panel - with a charming naivet of rendering - is a simplified derivative of a larger (11in. high), elaborate and crowded composition that forms the center of a triptych in the Walters Art Gallery, Baltimore (no. 44.149). That in turn was based around 1520-25 on an earlier wood engraving in a printed Book of Hours published by Thielman Kerver in Paris in 1505.
