Contemporary tree calf, gilt-lettered spine labels (very worn, several covers detached, spines with library paper labels); Atlas: original morocco backed paper boards, upper cover with decorative printed label, title, 10 full-page or folding engraved maps of Revolutiuonary War campagns by J. Yeager; with the often lacking 22-page list of subscribers.
FIRST EDITION, octavo format. Marshall's fundamental biography of Washington was compiled largely from the late President's voluminous papers, at that date in the possession of his nephew, Bushrod. Howes M317; Sabin 44788 ("indispensible work"). The highly accurate maps were expressly commissioned for this work. (6)
