THREE NORTHERN CALIFORNIA TWINED BASKETS
the first, possibly Karuk, with rounded sides tapering inward to rim, woven of bear grass, maidenhair fern, and alder-dyed woodwardia fern, with half-twist overlay design of serrated motifs circumscribing the body; the second, Shasta, with tall sides tapering slightly inward to rim, woven of bear grass, maidenhair fern, and alder-dyed woodwardia fern, with bold full-twist overlay design composed of a series of four crosses encircling above the base, surmounted by a serrated zigzag band about the sides; the third, Hupa, of cylindrical form, woven of bear grass and maidenhair fern, with full-twist overlay design of quail topknot motifs encircling the body
