PEPYS, Samuel (1633-1703). Document signed, as Secretary to the Navy Board, 'Navy Office', 15 May 1669, an order to 'the Master Attend[an]t, Ma[ste]r Shippwr[igh]t and Clerk of ye Survey of his Ma[jesty's] yard Deptford', directing them to repair, caulk and prepare for further service 'his Ma[jesty's] hoy ye Black Dog', which 'doeth want some repaires and to be caulked within board & without', also signed by Sir John Minnes (Comptroller of the Navy), Thomas Middleton and Sir John Cox, one page, folio, docketed on verso.
Pepys's diary entry for this date makes much of his work, and of the trouble with his eyes that was to lead him to forsake his diary at the end of the same month. A 'hoy' is a small ship, usually sloop-rigged and used on short coastal journeys.
