A fascinating manuscript, recording 18th-century life in Britain. The journal comprises the detailed travel diary kept by a member of the Ward family of County Down, Northern Ireland, beginning at Holy Head on 8 July 1785. As she and her husband Maxwell journey through Ireland, England and Wales, she makes detailed observations on major towns, including Chester, Manchester ('a handsome large town'; with details of the manufacture of materials, methods of weaving and dying velvets, calicos,'dimity's, muslins' etc), Buxton, Derby (details of Potteries and description of processes, glazes etc), Ashburn, Dove Dale, Sheffield, Scarborough, Castle Howard, Birmingham, Worcester, Gloucester, Wells (Wookery Hole), Bath, Marlborough, Newbury, Reading, Windsor, and finally from 'Hounslow to Town'. Prominent figures are also described, including Lords Scarsdale and Beaufort.

The collection of 18th-century recipes and remedies include saffron biscuits, peppermint drops, how 'to dress a claves head like turtle', oyster soup, 'soup to feed 60 poor people' and a remedy 'for the bite of a mad dog'; and three others. (4)
