FIRST EDITION AND THE FIRST APPEARANCE IN PRINT OF THE 'LEWIS CARROLL' PSEUDONYM. The Train is the vehicle for some of Dodgson's earliest publications, which appear in 4 of the 5 volumes; they include: 'Solitude', where the pseudonym first occurs; 'Hiawatha's Photographing', Carroll's famous parody of Longfellow; 'Upon the Lonely Moor', a parody of Wordsworth; 'Ye Carpette Knyghte'; 'The Path of Roses'; 'The Three Voices', a witty parody of Tennyson; 'The Sailor's Wife'; 'Novelty and Romancement'. The Train also includes the first appearance of Robert Barnabas Brough's semi-autobiographical novel Marston Lynch. In this set, vol. II bears the imprint of Groombridge and Sons, and not S.O. Beeton (as the set described by WMGC does). Williams, Madan, Green and Crutch 14. (5)
