Picard's model in the present work is Marie Krysinska, the Symbolist poet. Krysinska was a favourite muse of Picard and was at the centre of the bohemian lifestyle of the authors and poets of Montmartre. As well as being a poet (published in journals central to the fin de siècle avant-garde such as Le Chat Noir), Krysinska was a novelist, essayist and composer.
