The present lot is from a series of seven pieces depicting scenes from the 'Story of Psyche.' The designs, which have been attributed to Jan van Orley were probably woven by Peter van den Hecke (active 1700-1752). An earlier piece bears the weaver's mark of Wilhelm van Leefdael (active 1650-1685). Another versions with different border designs are in the Thurn und Taxis Collection, Regensburg (weaver's mark of Peter van den Hecke) and the Philbrook Museum of Art, Tulsa, Oklahoma (woven with the arms of Maria-Theresa of Austria), see Nicole de de Reynis, "Jean van Orley: une tenture de l'histoire de Psych," Gazette des Beaux Arts, VIe priode, vol. CXXV, no. 1514, March 1995, pp. 209-220.
