For a related weathervane, see Miller, The Art of the Weathervane (Exton, Pennsylvania, 1984), p. 125. A trade catalog of weathervanes manufactured by Harris & Company shows No. 10, a running horse called "Black Hawk" valued at $15.00 and measuring 25 inches, as is the example illustrated here (Miller, p. 152). This form and name were commonly produced by several weathervane manufacturers. A running horse weathervane manufactured by J.W. Fiske and also called "Black Hawk" is illustrated in their 1893 trade catalog, however Fiske version was slightly larger (see J.W. Fiske 1893: The American Historical Catalog Collection (Princeton, 1971), p. 19, No. 201).
