Lot Essay

Born in Liverpool, England, Isaac and his brother Joseph Heard (active 1839-1856) specialized in maritime portraits. This painting of the The Castine, a vessel which transported cotton from New Orleans to Liverpool, was probably commissioned by W.E. Woodhouse who owned the ship by that name. According to family tradition, the painting hung in the Woodhouse study accompanied by other portraits of ships from the line and subsequently, descended through the family until the present owner purchased it.
