Lot Essay

The present carpet is in a Cornély stitch which is a semi-mechanized technique, adapted from embroidery, where tightly twisted yarns are attached to a backing. Ernest Boiceau (1881-1950), a swiss designer based in Paris, is known for his aesthectic originality and often experimented with new weaving techniques, including the Cornély stitch. (S. Day, Art Deco and Modernist Carpets, London, 2002, pp. 23-24.).
