[CIVIL WAR]. The Jolly Exempts. Boston: Lee and Shepard, c. 1863.

39 (of 48) triangular puzzle pieces, each printed with a quarter of a face, in their original box and one lithograph paper game sheet with 12 different faces matching those on the puzzle pieces. Below each face on the sheet is a printed reason, some obviously comical, for getting out of military service during the Civil War. Reasons include "I paid $300 for my beau.", "Ha! Ha! False teeth exempts me!", "I'm off for Canada.", and "My bald head saves me." The object of the game appears to be to collect the four correct puzzle pieces needed to cover one of the excuses, which is then the player's reason for not going to war. A REMARKABLE CIVIL WAR GAME.
