A RARE AND IMPORTANT EMBELLISHED CARVED RED LACQUER DOUBLE- PEACH-FORM BOX AND COVER
CHINA, QING DYNASTY, EARLY JIAQING PERIOD (1796-1820)

Lot Essay

Box of this shape, unusually large size and embellished with jades and hard stones appear to be very rare.
The Victoria and Albert Museum pocesses an earlier similar peach-form box made of red lacquer and embellished with jades and hard stones, illustrated in R.L. Hobson, Chinese Art, London 1927, pl.90
As the peach is an emblem of marriage and longevity, one can assume that the box could have been made as a great marriage gift. The decoration of the box is most auspicious as well, with inlays made of jade and representing bats and smaller peaches
