Portant sur la couverture le titre Yu Ti Mian Hua Tu soit 'Album illustré sur la Culture du Coton accompagné d'une composition impériale' ; débutant par une composition poétique de l'Empereur Kangxi reprise par le commanditaire de l'ouvrage Fang Guancheng, ce dernier avait fait réaliser les esquisses des dessins en avril de la trentième année du règne de Qianlong ; la même année en juillet, l'Empereur enthousiaste donna sa permission à Fang Guancheng de faire graver les plaques et de procéder à l'estampage ; suivi de 13 planches décrivant les différentes étapes de la culture du coton, chacune accompagnée d'une planche inscrite d'un poème de Fang Guancheng ; terminé par quatre planches formant un colophon destinés à expliquer l'importance de la culture du coton ; coffret en carton gainé et brodé ; accidents et trous de vers

Lot Essay

This album of rubbings was ordered the 11th day, 4th month of the 30st year of Qianlong's reign (1766) with the permission of the Emperor by Fang Guancheng, governor of Beijing and tutor of the crown prince.
It was presented to the Emperor on the 16th day, 11th month of the 30st year of his reign.
It is composed by 13 of the 16 original rubbings made from stone carvings. The Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris has a complete painted version of this album, from the Collection of the Minister Bertin. It could well be the original paintings from which the stone carvings were made.
The present album has been remounted in Europe as the original order is not respected. It is known as the 'Marcilly Album'.
