A CARVED CELADON JADE 'THREE ABUNDANCES' GROUP
CHINA, QING DYNASTY, QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)

Lot Essay

The three fruits are symbolising either Immortality (peach) or Prosperity (pomegranate) or Wealth (citrus). Combined together with the addition of two bats, they convey auspicious wishes for Happiness and Longevity. They are commonly named 'The Three Abundances'.
See some related carved jade groups such as the one representing two peaches and bats from Ip Yee, Chinese Jade Carving, Hong Kong Museum of Art, 21 October-24 December 1983, pp.216-217, pl.195 ; see also the two peaches in A. Forsyth and B. McElney, Jades from China, The Museum of East Asian Art, June 1994, p.398, pl.328
