Lot Essay
See a very similar blue and white vase from the Edward T. Chow collection, illustrated in R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics in the Meiyintang Collection, vol.2, p.115, pl.743. The vase, dated early 18th century, is decorated with ladies on a balustraded terrace, the neck is enhanced with two curved handles in shape of animal heads holding movable rings. The vase is glazed but the handles and rings were left in the biscuit such as on the present lot. In the caption, the author explains that the unglazed ring handles were probably once gilded and refers to a similar example in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, illustrated in Hobson 1915, vol.II, pl.92, fig.2
