UNMARKED, CIRCA 1770,
The seal of John Ramey, impressed with a ship in full sail & "SIG IOHANNIS RAMEY NOT & TAB PUB", 4¼ in. long (10.8 cm.).

John Ramey of Great Yarmouth, the son of John Ramey, master mariner, & his wife Margaret, née Pulteney, started life as an attorney. He married Abigail Browne & supported his father-in-law, William Browne, in his political endeavours, finally succeeding him in the lucrative post of Receiver General for the county of Norfolk. He was Mayor of Great Yarmouth in 1760 & again in 1763, dying in 1794, aged 75. From 1747 he lived in a house on Howard Street, the site of the old "Black Boys" tavern, spending the latter part of his life at Scratby Hall. On his death he was the oldest member or "father" of the corporation. His daughter, Abigail Browne Ramey, married Alexander Home, 9th Earl of Home, in 1768.
