A WILLIAM IV/VICTORIAN COMPOSITE 4-PIECE SILVER TEA & COFFEE SET TOGETHER WITH AN ASSOCIATED VICTORIAN SALVER,
DIFFERENT DATES & MAKERS, LONDON/SHEFFIELD, 1830/1854,
The teapot, sugar bowl & coffee pot by Jonathan Hayne, London, 1830, squat circular , embossed & chased with flowers & scrolls, engraved with crest within buckle & strap cartouche, anthemion, shell & floral-decorated thumbpieces, rose finials, floral-chased spouts, the cream jug matching but with scroll handle & patched where crest should be, by Hayne & Cater, London, 1854, the salver by ES over WS, Sheffield, 1854, & retailed by James Wordley of Liverpool, with partly- pierced flower & scroll border on 4 bracket feet, engraved with the arms of The Revd. Thomas Raffles above an inscription "Presented to the Revd. Thos. Raffles D.D. by Miss Frances Almina Parnell in grateful testimony of his kindness A.D.MDCCCLIV.", all within a large & decorative scroll, strapwork & floral surround, 22 in. diameter (55.8 cm.), 193 oz. Further details
The crest & arms are for the Reverend Thomas Raffles of Liverpool (1788-1863), a cousin of Sir Stamford Raffles, (1781-1826), founder of Singapore. He preached at Great George Street Chapel, Liverpool & spent over 50 years in the ministry. His record of Liverpool life & his work there was published posthumously in London in 1864, entitled "Memoirs of the Life and Ministry of Rev. Thomas Raffles".
