RUSSIAN (VOLGA AREA), 19TH CENTURY
Twelve episodes from the Saint's childhood, miracles and martyrdom surround his bust-lenghth portrait, and four family saints are represented on the border. All are meticulously painted against the gold background. St. Nicholas in the central image is flanked by Christ and his Mother, the first offering him the Gospels and the latter the Episcopal stole. The icon is opulent, with elaborate punched and gilt stylised motifs and pearl-studded decorations all around.
