THE LAST SUPPER
RUSSIAN (ST. PETERSBURG); THE SILVER OKLAD IS DATED 1840, MAKER'S MARK: MB (PROBABLY MICHAIL BORODULIN)
Christ gesturing in speaking, flanked by six apostles at each side, all seated around an elongated table covered by a tablecloth with elaborate floral motifs. The chalice, the grapes and the loaves of bread are references to Christ's Sacrificial Passion which was to follow the Last Supper, whereas for the beholder they would have also been reminders of the Eucharistic sacrament. The event takes place in an interior, with lattice-tiled floor and an opulent curtain hanging from above. The animated composition is painted realistically with mild colours and it is has an elaborately hammered silver oklad with gilt haloes.
38½ x 16 1/8 in. (98 x 41 cm)
