A WOODEN PROCESSIONAL CROSS
RUSSIAN, CIRCA 1800
On the obverse, the Crucifix is flanked by the darken sun and the blooded moon according to the words of the Gospel. The Old of the Days and the Holy Spirit in the form of the dove appear above, thus forming together with the crucified Christ the Trinity. Below the cross, in a cave on the summit of Golgotha is the skull of Adam and beyond the walled city of Jerusalem. The reverse of the cross is decorated with the 'Arma Christi' and other symbols related to the Passion cycle.
14 1/8 x 8 7/8 in. (36.25 x 22.5 cm)
Provenance
From the estate of Lord Norton, Filhoughley Hall, Warwickshire. The cross was used in the estate's chapel since the 19th century. Acquired by the present owner in spring of 2002 when the contents of the estate were sold off.
