Fils d'Eugène Lepoittevin et grand ami de Guy de Maupassant, Louis Lepoittevin expose au Salon à partir de 1877. En 1879, il expose un tableau intitulé 'Lilas' (n. 1902), qui pourrait, mais sans certitude, être celui-ci.
