Copy after the famous Cheval Turc(c.1810-12) by Théodore Géricault which now hangs in the Louvre, could this be by the artist himself or someone from his entourage? Could this work be a preliminary study for the Louvre painting? There are various opinions. Professor Lorenz Eitner does not exclude an attribution to Géricault. However, other specialist and namely Bruno Chénique do not believe it to be by Géricault. In the very complex domain of attribution of Géricault unsigned oil sketches, the problem of this Cheval Turc remains.

Copie d'après le fameux Cheval Turc de Théodore Géricault conservé au musée du Louvre par l'artiste lui-même ou par un membre de son entourage? Etude préliminaire pour le tableau du Louvre par Géricault? Les différences qui existent au niveau de la selle et dans les jeux d'ombre et de lumière pourraient aller dans ce sens.
Les avis sont partagés. D'après des photographies, le professeur Lorenz Eitner n'exclut pas une attribution à Géricault. En revanche, d'autres spécialistes, et notamment monsieur Bruno Chénique, n'y voient pas la main de Géricault.
Dans la très problématique question des attributions des esquisses non signées de Géricault, le problème de ce " Cheval Turc " reste entier.
