Rupert Koller was the son of Hugo Koller, a wealthy Viennese industrialist and scholar, and of Broncia Koller (born Pinell), one of the finest female artists of her day. In 1918, Schiele executed three drawings of Rupert (Kallir nos. D2475-2477), several of Hugo Koller and of Silvia Koller, Rupert's sister, as well as a major oil portrait of Hugo Koller, which now hang in the Österreichische Galerie, Vienna (Kallir, no. P320).
