Lot Essay

The design and its overall shape suggest that this cabinet was made in the vicinity of Braunschweig, as the typical inlaid panels found on the doors can be related to similar work excecuted in Braunschweig during the 1750's. This bureau cabinet can also be compared with two cabinets circa 1740-1750, illustrated in H. Kreisel, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels (Munich, 1970) vol. II, pl. 875, 878. For a virtual identical cabinet see U. Dobler, Barockmöbel, Bürgerliche Möbel aus zwei Jahrhunderten (Augsburg 1992), pl. 439.
