Lot Essay

Inspired by the work of André-Charles Boulle, ébéniste, ciseleur et doreur to Louis XIV, marquetry decoration of brass and pewter inlaid with tortoiseshell has become synonymous with his name. However, published designs and engravings for marquetry decoration were often drawn from engraved sources which were disseminated throughout Europe, such as those of Jean Bérain, and similarly decorated furniture was made in Germany and Austria. The most celebrated German cabinet-makers specialising in this technique include the Düsseldorf cabinet-maker Anton Lüchtenstein as well as Johann Georg Esser (1652-1727) of Augsburg.
