Lot Essay

Frederick II of Prussia (1712-1786), reigning from 1740 to 1786. This model by Mélingue is mentioned on page 9 of the 1860's sales catalogue of the Susse foundry as Numéro d'ordre 239, hauteur 45, artiste Mélingue, sujet Le Grand Frédéric (Figure équestre), prix en bronze 250 francs. This version of the foundry mark was used between 1840-1850, given this mark this statue must have been cast in the artist's lifetime.
