Lot Essay

The present plaster cast can be found in the 1957 catalogue of plaster casts of classical greek and Roman sculptures of the Gipsformerie der Staatlichen Museen Preussischer Kulturbesitz Berlin, plate 87, catalogue number 116.
The original Ludovisi Juno is housed in the Casino, of Palazetto, in the Villa Ludovisi in Rome.
Especially in the late 18th and early 19th century the bust was highly admired. Goethe, amongst others, thought of it as the ideal of Roman beauty and placed a copy in his home in Weimar, now the Goethe-House.
