Lot Essay

This censer and cover was part of the collection formed by Alfred Morrison (1821-1897). He is believed to have commenced collecting in the late 1850s although a large number of pieces were added in 1860 or 1861 when he bought a large quantity of porcelain and cloisonné enamel items from Lord Loch of Drylaw (1827-1900), who had brought them back after the sacking of the Summer Palace, Peking, in 1860.
