DATED TIANQI FIFTH YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1625, AND KANGXI DINGSI YEAR, CORRESPONDING TO 1675
Painted in ink and colour on paper, predominantly in red, green, brown and blue, depicting the Buddha Sakyamuni in the centre, flanked by the Buddha of the East, Bhaisajyaguru, and the Buddha of the West, Amitabha, followed by various luohan, gods, godesses and guardians, some with cartouches containing dated inscriptions

Lot Essay

These paintings were produced in a small village in the Xe County in Anhui province. The main part of the composition is dated to the 5th year of Tianqi, but the two panels at either end depicting the four guardian figures are dated to the Kangxi period.
