Lot Essay

Lotus decoration on a fish bowl of this date appears to be very rare, as most of the published examples are decorated solely with dragons. For a discussion of the difficulties in firing these large fish bowls, see R. L. Hobson, The Wares of the Ming Dynasty, New York, 1923, p. 110. A slightly larger fish bowl, also decorated with ducks and lotus, was sold in our New York Rooms, 27 November 1991, lot 328. Another, smaller and bearing the mark of the Longqing emperor, was included in International Exhibition of Chinese Art, Royal Academy of Arts, London, 1935, no. 1819 and was lent by Sir Percival David, Bt.
