QIANLONG (1736-95)
Of bombé form standing on four short archaistic bracket feet, the exteriors repoussé with scrolling flowers and acanthus leaves and reserved on each side with a Canton enamel European-subject panel within rococo foliate surrounds, the panels on the long sides depicting two mounted huntsmen chasing a fox crossing a bridge towards two gentlemen in conversation beside two goats, and the short sides with two figures and a hound on the banks of a river, the flat rim repoussé with scrolling lotus, one with metal liner

Compare the smaller Canton enamel jardinière of this form, also dating to the Qianlong period, which was exhibited Chinese Painted Enamels, The China Institute in America, New York, 23 October 1969 - 1 February 1970, catalogue no. 40, p. 32, where it is suggested that such vessels were used for japonica bulbs or Oriental flower arrangements.
