Portraits of female westerners are unusual during the late 18th/early 19th Century and particularly full-length portraits. Several portraits of gentlemen by Spoilum and his followers in oil on fabric and on primed cloth are ilustrated by Carl L. Crossman, The Decorative Arts of The China Trade, Woodbridge, Suffolk, 1991, pp. 26 - 53, one of which depicts a half-portrait of Martha Wheatland as colour plate 13 and another, a full-length portrait of a Parsee merchant, plate 14.
