Lot Essay

Similar lions were placed on top of the dwarf posts by the entrance to the British Museum but were relocated in 1896 to the railings outside the Charles Holden part of the Law Society building in Chancery Lane. Other examples were positioned around the Wellington Memorial in St Paul's Cathedral, London 1892-1912. Two plaster versions are in the British Museum. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds a similar bronze example.
