ASSUMPTION OF THE VIRGIN, in an initial F on a leaf from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT MISSAL ON VELLUM
[Tuscany, ?Siena, late 14th century]
361 x 251mm. The Virgin in a blue/white mantle and mandorla is carried heavenwards in the arms of two orange seraphim, the initial of green bars and orange foliage frames her against the punched burnished gold background and extends into the central and lower margins in foliage of green, fake gold, pink and blue that incorporates feathery bird-heads, golden disks and a face. 26 lines written in black ink in a gothic bookhand between four verticals and 27 horizontals ruled in gray, justification: 235 x 75-20-75mm, rubrics in red, two-line intials of red or blue with flourishing of the other colour (outer corner of border slightly abraded, a few tiny losses of gold from initial ground).
This initial opened the prayer after the introit for the Mass on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin, and was folio ccxvii verso in a Missal.
The gorgeous bright colours and the punched gold of this fine initial and border suggest that they are the work of a Sienese illuminator.

a page with the Masses for the Octave of the feast of the Assumption, folio ccxviii, the following leaf from the same manuscript. (2)
