ILLUMINATED INITIALS S AND M, on leaves from an ILLUMINATED MANUSCRIPT MISSAL ON VELLUM
[southern Germany, probably Augsburg, end 15th century]
315 x 240mm. The initial with foliage staves of green against a punched and ruled ground of burnished gold and within a moulding frame of gray and red highlit yellow, tendrils with leaves of blue, green and pink and with a red flowerhead curling into the margins, interspersed with golden disks with pink penwork surrounds; 25 lines in black ink in two sizes of gothic bookhand between four verticals and 26 horizontals ruled in brown, justification: 218 x 73-15-72mm, rubrics in red, capitals touched red, letters of opening word and two-line initials alternately red or blue, leather page-tab (slight thumbing of margins).
The initial S opens the introit Suscepimus deus for the Feast of the Purification of the Virgin; this was folio lxxxxiiii verso in a Missal.
The leaf with the initial M the same, but the initial staves are pink and the frame is of green and blue with foliage sprays extending into the left and upper margins. Once f.lxxxxi, the initial opens the prayer Maiestatem tuam domine asking for the intercession of St Andrew. (2)
