[ALBUM AMICORUM.] -- HEUSS, Johann Michael. Wittenberg, 1557-58.

189 x 135 mm. Manuscript on paper. 8 leaves. 6 FULL-PAGE WATERCOLOR DRAWINGS REPRESENTING THE LIBERAL ARTS each signed with monogram "DH," each facing manuscript verses and comments in the hands of Heuss's friends (some pale soiling and staining). 17th-century Italian citron morocco, sides with elaborate gilt and silver borders centering central crests (silver partly oxidized, some light rubbing, inner hinges reinforced). Provenance: Johann Michael Heuss; Baron Horace de Landau (1824-1903, bookplate); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 25 March 1965.

A fine set of watercolor drawings from the mid 16th-century, representing the female forms of the six liberal arts, with interesting representations of costumes, musical instruments, etc. This album amicorum was kept by a young Wittenberg University student, Johann Michael Heuss, from December-January 1557-58, and each drawing is faced with appropriate verses and epigrams in the hand of a fellow student. The only monogram "DH" found in Nagler is that of the unknown woodcutter who collaborated with the engraved Lautensack in illustrating the Francolin Thurnierbuch, Vienna, 1560. The text provides fine examples of eight different German Humanistic hands; with Hebrew lettering occurring in one of the mottos.
