["BACKLESS" BINDING.] Officium Beatae Mariae Virginis. Salamanca: Guillaume Foquel, 1591.

8o (193 x 121 mm). Engravings in text. Contemporary Spanish "backless" binding of gilt-decorated calf over wooden boards, the spine composed of narrow pieces of wood fixed to narrow cut sheets and the boards, then sewn on cords to the text block of the book, brass catches and clasps, edges decorated and gilt (worn, text block loose). Provenance: Luisa de Puerto Caxxeno y Sandobal (inscription on rear pastedown, some notes in text); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 6 November 1956.

A very rare form of binding which, due to its fragility, is seen virtually always in worn condition.
