One double-page plate, 124 woodcut illustrations (including duplication), 20 full-page, 249 woodcut arms, 2 full-page, most arms COLORED IN A CONTEMPORARY HAND, woodcut device at end (minor browning, light staining and offsetting). Contemporary blind stamped half pigskin over wooden boards (clasps missing). Provenance: Oliver Belmont (bookplate); Ulrich Jahn (Book Catalogue 1, label); purchased from Emil Offenbacher, 26 June 1956.

FIRST EDITION. A magnificently printed and illustrated German woodcut book, describing tournaments and festivities. The first edition, printed in the famous THEUERDANK TYPE (Augsburg 1517) is of the greatest rarety. The 36 tournaments held in different German cities, are described in the order of the events: arrival, festivities, tournament, celebration of the victor, departure from the town etc. The coats-of-arms are those of the victors of the tournaments and those of the towns where the tournaments were held. The woodcuts are by "HH" who illustrated another work for Rodler in 1531. Only the Broxbourne copy sold in the past 30 years. Not in Adams; Davies 372 (second edition only); Muther 1783.
